Light Hu

Using lines to express the force of life, the works convey a tension that feels organic, alive, and perceptible. The viewer is not merely looking, but sensing a flow—a rhythm in motion.

Tsai-Shin Hu is a contemporary Taiwanese artist whose work frequently takes line as a central visual language. These lines are not calm or rigid; instead, they possess a dynamic quality—like interwoven nerves and pathways. They seem to flow, breathe, and vibrate, carrying an animated vitality. At the same time, they resemble the subconscious, memory, and emotion as they surface onto the canvas. Her practice revolves around profound dialogues between existence and perception, time and memory, where rhythm and traces can be distinctly felt within the imagery.

Artistic Statement

The landscapes of my creation are poetic. Perception and thought draw out pathways, while lines articulate a subtle, pulsating awareness. Life is the core of this universe, radiating outward through perception and encircling the body (vessel), the mind (spirit), and nature—forming a world that unfolds around life as its central force.

The white lines within the paintings grow like creeping plants, while also extending like expanding thoughts. Through repeated acts of squeezing paint, releasing and condensing it into lines with physical volume, the line bears weight as it moves forward, leaving behind traces of motion. This process resembles spinning silk: intention guides the body and muscles, while sensory nerves continuously transmit signals. The body moves back and forth, sways, and oscillates—like the echo of a pendulum—where inertia and non-inertia, the subconscious and consciousness, alternate and exchange dominance. Heartbeat, breath, and awareness resonate together, massaging and releasing within the waves of this current.

Lines serve as guides of flow. Unlike drawn brushstrokes, these lines possess three-dimensionality. In viewing them, a sense of tactile perception emerges—not through physical contact, but through a visual sensation of touch. As volume and structure take form, perception is activated by sight alone. This leads us to question how perception itself can be both real and magical. Thus, these white lines—light yet weighted—become a means to articulate the correspondence between the real and the unreal.

This landscape may appear external, yet it is in fact internal.
It is toward this that I move, and from this that I am born.
