Zeng Yongning's paintings inherit the calligraphic lines of ink wash, transitioning from brush to modern writing tools like ballpoint pens, from soft pens to hard pens. The ball of the ballpoint pen rolls back and forth, and the seeping ink gathers dots and lines into blocks on the canvas. The infinite extension, overlapping, replication, and regeneration of dots in the artwork create a composition of soft lines and block structures. The artist intertwines and layers rich colors and lines, belonging to a deep consciousness with irrational yet intuitive sensory experiences, allowing lines to wander on paper and imparting a sense of space and temporal flow to the artwork. Recently, the artist has expanded from ballpoint pens to explore more media such as ink, mineral pigments, colored pencils, and acrylics, striving for more precise translations of personal perceptions and experiences.

Born in 1978 in Changhua, Taiwan, Zeng Yongning graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Graduate Institute of Arts Creation at National Taipei University of the Arts and is now a full-time creator. As an artist with an academic background, Zeng chooses not conceptually driven actions or media developed through techniques like oil painting, acrylic, ink wash, or gouache as expressive pathways, but instead primarily uses ballpoint pens. In 2005, his work "Wild Garden" was selected for the Taipei Arts Awards, and in 2006, he received the 9th Lee Chung-sheng Creative Award, among others. Initially, he used ballpoint pens to embellish his ink wash paintings to spark inspiration. However, the remarkable effects produced by the ballpoint pen led him to explore the possibilities of ballpoint pen art, shifting his creative focus to shine on the world stage. In his works, the lines and ink dots of the ballpoint pen return to the most basic and ordinary forms of expression, depicting primarily repetitive, intricate, and geometrically strong patterns. In the development of his forms, he achieves infinite expansion in the simplest manner, creating non-narrative images often referred to generically as "gardens" in his early works. Zeng Yongning's choice of creative media and its associated expressive language challenges the boundaries of art or academic painting. This provocation is premised on pushing the limits and taboos within this challenging field, exploring norms and logic to their furthest extremes. His works have been exhibited multiple times in international exhibitions such as L'Espace culturel Bonnefoy in France, and have toured in Germany, France, the United States, Hungary, Italy, Hong Kong, and China. They are also included in the permanent collections of important galleries and museums both domestically and internationally, including the White Rabbit Gallery in Australia, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and the Changhua Cultural Bureau, making him one of the most prominent young artists in Taiwan today.
